Foundation News: Programs, Research & Advocacy
Team LRF Update
Our recently launched Team LRF for Lymphoma Research Foundation program got off to a great start. Team LRF was created for people who are interested in participating in endurance sporting events and who would like to raise money and awareness for LRF. We’ve been successful in putting together teams in various events where we had official charity entries, such as the Holyoke St. Patrick's Day Road Race in Massachusetts, the Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride, the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour in NYC, the RXR Long Island Marathon in New York, Grandma's 33rd Annual Marathon in Minnesota, and the CIGNA Falmouth Road Race in Massachusetts. The participants of Team LRF and their friends and family have raised a combined total of over $200,000 this year! We’re looking forward to upcoming Team LRF events happening this Fall and early 2010. Please visit www.lymphoma.org/teamlrf for more details.
We also wanted to provide a platform for other supporters who were participating in events in which LRF did not have official entry, but still wanted to raise money. Teammates Across the Country also allows individuals to host a webpage on our site to let friends and family know about the event that they are running in, walking in, swimming in, cycling in. etc. Teammates can track their fundraising progress, upload pictures and share their story about why they are raising money for LRF. For more information, please visit www.lymphoma.org/teammates.
Often times we are contacted by individuals and groups who are interested in planning their own fundraisers for LRF. Community Fundraisers, as we call them, are happening around the country throughout the year. Most recently, we received a donation from the Reston Masters Swim Team (RMST), from Reston, Virginia. In 1999, an existing swimming event was renamed the Jim McDonnell 2-Mile Swim in honor of founding team member Jim McDonnell, who passed away in 1998 from non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Since then, each year they have selected different lymphoma focused charities to support. Over the years they have donated over $13,500 to LRF, contributing $7,000 this year alone! RMST sponsors the race every year on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and they are already planning their 2010 event.
If you are interested in starting a fundraiser in your area, please contact Taylor Zitay at (646) 465-9103 or tzitay@lymphoma.org for more information. We are happy to give advice and tips to help you get started or pick up where you left off from a previous event. We’d like to thank all of our supporters around the country who are consistently coming up with new ideas on how to spread the word about LRF and raise critical funds to support our research.
Team LRF members get ready to ride in the 2009 TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour.
