Sixth Annual World Lymphoma Awareness Day
- Tuesday, September 15, 2009
In 2004 the international Lymphoma Coalition launched World Lymphoma Awareness Day (WLAD) to provide a platform for doctors, nurses, patient support groups, patients and their families to share vital knowledge about lymphoma, its signs and symptoms, and how it affects lives of thousands of people around the world.
As a founding member of the Lymphoma Coalition, LRF works with its chapters every year to come up with ways to commemorate this worldwide effort to raise public awareness.
Here is a sample of what is taking place this year:
Our National Capital Chapter sponsored Living Life with Lymphoma: Ask the Doctor About The Latest on Lymphoma on September 14 at Georgetown University Hospital featuring Bruce D. Cheson, MD – Head of Hematology – Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Georgetown University and Chairman Elect of LRF's Scientific Advisory Board.
Our NYC Chapter will hold Living Life with Lymphoma: Survivor Networking Night on September 15 at Gilda's Club on Houston Street.
Once again the Boston Red Sox will join our Massachusetts Chapter in commemorating WLAD. Prior to their September 15th game against the LA Angels, Red Sox Pres/CEO Larry Lucchino and Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester will accept the inaugural Lymphoma Research Foundation Hope Award on behalf of the team. This award is being given to the Red Sox in recognition of their support of the Massachusetts chapter and annual participation in WLAD commemorations.
LRF President, Suzanne Bliss, will be speaking about The State of LRF: Research, Education and Patient Services at the New Jersey Chapter meeting taking place on September 15 at the Senior/Community Center in Somerset.
Arizona will be sponsoring two events commemorating WLAD. The first, held on September 19, is Living Life with Lymphoma: Ask the Doctor About The Latest on Lymphoma featuring Dr. Istvan Redei – Director of Stem Cell Transplant and Cell Therapy, Cancer Treatment Centers of America and Dr. Shauna Birdsall – Director of Naturopathic Medicine, Cancer Treatment Centers of America. This educational program will take place at the West Campus of Arizona State University. For their second event, chapter members will be out in force Lymphoma Research Foundation Day at Chase Field – home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Tickets to Arizona Diamondbacks / Colorado Rockies cost just $30 and a portion of each ticket purchased goes back to LRF.
Our new Long Island Chapter has chosen Living Life with Lymphoma: Survivor Networking Night for its inaugural chapter event on September 21 at the Office of Kanti R. Rai, MD, North Shore LIU – Long Island Jewish Medical Center.
As Chapter President Donna Reinbolt has Tweeted, "five awesome oncologists" will be on hand for the Houston Chapter's Living Life With Lymphoma: Ask The Doctor About the Latest on Lymphoma scheduled for September 24 at Marathon Oil Corporation. These "five awesome oncologists" include: Luis Campos, MD – President, Oncology Consultants; Barbara Pro MD – Associate Professor - Department of Lymphoma/Myeloma – MD Anderson Cancer Center; Catherina Bollard, MD – Associate Professor, Department of Pediatrics; Section of Hematology-Oncology, Baylor College of Medicine; Richard E. Champlin, MD -- Professor & Chair – Department of Stem Cell Transplantation, MD Anderson Cancer Center and Anas Younes, MD – Profession of Medicine, Department of Lymphoma/Myeloma, MD Anderson Cancer Center.
If you are unable to attend any of our chapter activities, World Lymphoma Awareness Day is a great time to register to become an LRF Advocate, and contribute your voice to the growing number of people advocating for increased funding for lymphoma research and access to quality lymphoma treatment and care.
Finally, in honor or World Lymphoma Awareness Day, the Board and staff at LRF wants to thank each and everyone for all you do in support of our mission to eradicate lymphoma and serve those touched by this disease. |
