Lymphoma Research Foundation News Room:
New Photopheresis System Approved by FDA
On Monday, March 23, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved THERAKOS CELLEX Photopheresis System for the palliative (reducing the severity of symptoms) treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) that are unresponsive to other forms of treatment.
CTCL represents a spectrum of T-cell lymphomas that arise in the skin. The most common type is mycosis fungoides, which is often indolent. The skin may have localized, thickened patches that appear reddish. If the cells are found in the blood, this disease is more aggressive and may be called Sezary Syndrome. CTCL comprises about 2 percent to 3 percent of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas.
