August 18, 2010

Dear Chapter Members and Friends,

As we wind down the Summer months, we eagerly approach the Fall with renewed vigor. As a Chapter, we are working on enhancing our leadership structure so that we may better serve the membership and create new and better opportunities for Chapter members to work on our areas of focus: raising awareness through outreach and programming, fundraising, and advocacy. Please feel free to contact me if you wish to become more involved.

Survivor Networking Night on World Lymphoma Awareness Day: On Wednesday, September 15, 2010, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, we will host a survivor networking night reception at Gilda's Club in lower Manhattan, 195 West Houston St., (212) 647-9700. Please RSVP to Melecia Ming, LRF at (646) 465-9104 or NewYork@lymphoma.org. Online registration is available at Survivor Networking Night. This will also celebrate World Lymphoma Awareness Day.

Other Upcoming Events: Please take note that our next regular Chapter meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm at the offices of Rivkin Radler, 555 Madison Avenue (between 55th and 56th streets).

Also note that the New York Lymphoma Workshop, at the Brooklyn Marriott, is scheduled for Saturday, November 6, 2010. For more information or to register for the workshop visit, www.lymphoma.org/nyworkshop2010.

We are working on filling the upcoming calendar, so please visit the Chapter webpage and keep your eyes open for our email blasts.

Lymphomathon: The 2010 Lymphomathon was very successful, raising almost $150,000 (for the combined weekend events with the Long Island Chapter, the total raised exceeded $200,000). We thank you all once again for your support. Before you know it, we will need to turn our attention to next year's Lymphomathon and we look forward to doing so. As an immediate note, if anyone knows of any potential corporate sponsorship opportunities, please let us know; the cycle on obtaining sponsorships requires substantial lead time and they are something for which we presently should be on the lookout.

Advocacy: We are pleased to relate the success of LRF’s initiative to ensure that funding for the Geraldine Ferraro Blood Cancer Education Program was saved from the chopping block in the U.S. Senate's FY 2011 budget. LRF Advocates reached out to their legislators and prevented this program from being effectively dismantled, thereby preserving the only federal program that funds education and programming opportunities for blood cancer patients. Great work! The next initiative on our plate is to urge our Congressional Representatives to co-sponsor a resolution designating September 2010 as Blood Cancer Awareness Month. Please go to the Advocacy Action Center to take action.

We invite you at any time to share with us what you would like to see from the Chapter – what types of events and programs you would attend, how we might best serve you, and how you might wish to become involved in helping to further LRF's mission. Please feel free to drop me an email (newyork@lymphoma.org) or give me a call (516-357-3530), your feedback is appreciated and invaluable.

Thank you for all your support and involvement in the Chapter and LRF's mission, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
Paul V. Majkowski, New York Chapter President

Making a Difference: The LRF Advocacy Program

The New York Chapter provides important public policy and advocacy updates for chapter members, advocates and volunteers.

Our local Advocacy Program focuses on taking action on laws, policies and positions that affect every lymphoma patient and survivor. By contacting elected officials via phone calls, e-mail and letters in support of these priorities, local advocates help LRF to make lymphoma a national health priority.

We encourage you to attend a local chapter meeting, so that you can learn more about the LRF Advocacy Program, and to receive an update on federal policies likely to affect the lymphoma community. To become involved with these advocacy efforts, contact your local Advocacy Chair today at advocacy@lymphoma.org.
